Project Overview
Tafel.app was a groundbreaking digital solution developed by WebPX on behalf of Motus UG. The platform was designed to demonstrate how technology and social work can harmonize perfectly. We developed a comprehensive solution consisting of two mobile apps and a web dashboard, specifically designed for use by Tafel Deutschland. The project exemplifies how thoughtful digitalization can increase efficiency and create more time for what matters most: connecting with people.
Commissioned by Motus UG, we developed a solution consisting of three closely integrated components: the Tafel.app for customers (digital registration and virtual queuing), the Tafel Scanner for staff (QR-code-based check-in system), and a web platform for administration. All components were developed with a focus on usability and accessibility, as the target group at Tafel Deutschland is very diverse - from young families to elderly people without smartphone experience.
Particularly challenging was developing a solution that works for both tech-savvy and less experienced users. Through intensive user research and iterative prototyping phases, a platform emerged that maps complex processes in an intuitive way. Strict GDPR compliance was not just a legal necessity but a core feature that builds trust among sensitive target groups.
The calculated potential of the solution we developed for Motus UG with nationwide deployment was impressive: Over 300,000 hours of volunteer work could have been saved annually, while simultaneously improving service quality for food bank customers. However, the project was not implemented – Tafel Deutschland decided against adopting the solution. Nevertheless, the technical work and experience gained remain valuable.

What We Learned
Even though Tafel.app was not implemented, we gained valuable insights:
- • Complex Stakeholders: Decision-making in non-profit sectors often takes longer than expected
- • Technical Excellence Isn’t Enough: A good solution also needs the right circumstances
- • Flutter for Complex Apps: The technology proved itself – fast development, native performance
- • Privacy by Design: GDPR-compliant architecture from the start saves time later
