Project Overview
Drechslerei Kuhnert, a woodturning workshop in Rothenkirchen in Saxony’s Ore Mountains, has been making traditional wood art since 1986: snowflake children, incense smokers, Stupsi bunnies, owls and moles. Many customers collect the figures for years, series by series. Until now they kept track on paper, in their heads or not at all: Which figure is still missing? What’s new? Where is the nearest dealer?
With the Kuhnert Sammel-App we built a digital companion for exactly that. Collectors add their figures and see per series what is still missing. They keep wishlists that friends and family can reserve gifts from. On top of that come news from the workshop, a map of all branches and dealers, and the customer card to show at the checkout.
Behind the app sits a dedicated backend with an admin where the Kuhnert team manages catalogue, news, push notifications, dealers, customer cards and even the app icon, from a phone if needed. The product catalogue comes straight from the Shopware store. We developed app, backend and admin from the first specification to the release in both stores, and we run the platform.
Challenges
An older, tradition-minded audience
Many collectors are not digital natives. The app needs large type and clear paths and must not assume anything - while still looking like a premium workshop.
Catalogue from the existing store
Hundreds of figures, series and customer cards live in Shopware. The app has to take them over automatically, without anyone maintaining data twice.
Sharing without spoiling the surprise
Wishlists should be shareable for gifts - but the owner must never see what friends have reserved.
Usable without an account or a signal
Visitors should be able to try the app as a guest first, and the collection has to work in a shop with poor reception.
A small team maintains everything
The Kuhnert team has to manage news, pushes, dealers and texts on their own - without a developer and without a new app release.

Technology Highlights
Offline first
Collection, wishlists and news are stored locally in SQLite. Changes made offline go into a queue and sync as soon as there is a connection again.
Gift reservations
Reservations belong to the share link, not to the wishlist. The owner technically cannot see them - the surprise is guaranteed.
Shopware as the source
Products, series and customer cards arrive from Shopware automatically. Product images are cropped, cut out and served with a Blurhash preview automatically.
Privacy in analytics
Admin statistics only show dealer and customer groups of 15 people or more. Smaller groups, which could point to individuals, stay hidden.

What Makes the Project
The Kuhnert Sammel-App shows that a craft business can offer its customers an app of its own that doesn’t feel like a template. What mattered most was not any single feature but how everything fits together:
- • Brand, not template: dark green, lime and Benguiat serif from the Kuhnert identity, calm surfaces, no tech look
- • For every age group: large type, touch targets of at least 44 px, reduced motion is respected
- • Self-managed: the Kuhnert team controls news, pushes, texts and even seasonal app icons in the admin
- • Privacy from day one: fair consent, data export and account deletion right in the app
